Google Business Profile: The Free Marketing Channel Most Service Businesses Ignore

Someone two kilometers from your office just searched "your service near me" with money in hand, and Google showed them three competitors in a map box. If your business was not one of them, you lost the highest-intent lead that exists in marketing, to a listing that would have cost you nothing.

That map box is fed by Google Business Profile, and it is the most neglected free asset in small business marketing. This post covers what a complete profile actually unlocks, how setup and verification work (including the African-market realities), how to handle reviews without begging or bleeding, and how to connect the profile to your site so a Maps visitor becomes a booked call. We set these up as part of client launch packages, so the sequence below is the one we actually run.

What a complete profile unlocks

A Google Business Profile is not a directory entry. It is four distribution channels wearing one interface:

  • The local map pack: the three businesses shown with a map above normal results for local searches. For "near me" and "[service] in [city]" queries, the map pack collects most of the clicks before the regular results get seen.
  • Your knowledge panel: the info box that appears when someone searches your business by name. Without a profile, your brand search shows whatever the internet happens to say; with one, you control the photos, hours, links, and first impression.
  • Click-to-act buttons: call, directions, website, and booking actions directly in the search result. Zero-click customers are real: many will call you without ever visiting your site.
  • Reviews as public proof: the star rating next to your name in every one of those surfaces, which is often the entire shortlisting decision.

The compounding detail: profile signals also feed AI assistants answering "best [service] in [city]" questions. A complete, active profile is machine-readable proof your business exists and performs, which plugs directly into the visibility layers described in SEO, AEO, and GEO.

Setup and verification, with local realities

The mechanics are simple; the discipline is in the details:

  1. Claim or create the profile at google.com/business with the exact business name you use everywhere else. Consistency of name, address, and phone across your site and profile is a ranking factor; pick one spelling and defend it.
  2. Verification is Google confirming you exist at that location. Depending on region and business type this is a video walkthrough of your premises, a phone code, or sometimes a mailed postcard. In many African markets, video verification has become the practical default, and businesses without street-number addresses can use service-area settings instead: you define the zones you serve rather than a pin customers visit. A home-based business can legitimately hide its address and still rank.
  3. Complete everything. Category (the single most important field, choose the most specific one that fits), services with descriptions, hours, WhatsApp-reachable phone number, website link, and real photos: your work, your team, your space. Profiles with real photos measurably outperform logo-only ghosts.
  4. Keep it alive. A monthly photo or update post tells Google and customers the business is breathing. Ten minutes a month is the entire maintenance budget.

Reviews: how to ask, how to answer

Reviews are the currency of the map pack, and they respond to process, not luck:

  • Ask at the peak, not later. The moment a client says thank you is the moment to send the direct review link (your profile generates one). A week later, enthusiasm has a half-life and the review does not happen.
  • Make it one tap. Send the link by WhatsApp with a one-line message. Every extra step halves completion.
  • Answer every review, both kinds. A short, human thank-you for the good ones. For the bad ones: calm, factual, and solution-oriented, because the reply is not for the angry customer, it is for the hundred future customers reading it. Never argue in public; offer to resolve it directly and show you tried.
  • Never buy or fake reviews. Beyond the ethics, detection means suspension, and a suspended profile is worse than none.

Close the loop: profile to website to booking

An excellent profile that dumps visitors onto a slow homepage wastes its own work. Wire the journey: the website link goes to a fast, mobile-first page; the booking action points at an actual booking system rather than "call us"; and your site links back to the profile for reviews. Each surface reinforces the other, which is exactly how we wire it inside Social, Ads & Setup projects, profile, site, and booking as one path. If the booking half of that loop is your gap, the case for online booking covers it.

The ten-minute test

Search your business name, then your main service plus your city, in a private browser window. No knowledge panel on the name search means the profile is unclaimed or empty. Absent from the map pack on the service search means competitors are collecting your highest-intent leads. Both fixes start with the free listing above.

Quick checklist

Before you assume Google is working for you, confirm that:

  • your profile is claimed and verified
  • your business name, address, and phone match your website exactly
  • you picked the single most specific category that fits
  • your services, hours, and a WhatsApp-reachable number are complete
  • real photos of your work, team, and space are uploaded, not just a logo
  • you send the one-tap review link the moment a client says thank you
  • you reply to every review, calm and factual on the negative ones
  • your website link points to a fast page and your booking action to a real booking system
